Argo Blockchain Reports $18.8 Million Losses in First Half of 2022
Argo Blockchain, a digital asset mining firm, has disclosed a total loss of $18.8 million for the first half of this year. This loss contributes to a cumulative total loss of $75 million over the past year. The company has faced significant challenges in navigating the current market conditions, which have been characterized by a decline in the prices of major cryptocurrencies.
According to Argo Blockchain’s „Interim Half Year Results,“ the net losses for the first half of 2022 have decreased by 50% compared to the same period in 2022, when the losses amounted to $39.6 million. However, the company’s revenues have also declined by 21% compared to the previous year as a result of the drop in Bitcoin (BTC) prices.
The collapse of the Terra network has had a significant impact on the prices of BTC and other digital assets, leading to a decrease in market capitalization. Despite this challenging environment, Argo Blockchain managed to generate $24 million in revenue during the first six months of this year. The company’s balance sheet shows that it holds 46 BTC in assets and $9.1 million in cash.
To raise funds, Argo Blockchain conducted a share placement offering in July 2022, which generated $7.5 million. The company has also taken steps to reduce its debt, which stood at $143 million in June 2022. As new investments become available, Argo Blockchain has managed to cut its debt to $75 million, representing a substantial reduction of $68 million.
Another significant achievement for Argo Blockchain is the 21% reduction in non-mining operational costs in the last quarter compared to the second quarter of 2022.
Restructuring Key to Argo’s Survival
The year 2022 was particularly challenging for digital asset firms, including miners, due to the severe crypto market downturn. The declining value of BTC had a significant negative impact on the revenues of mining companies, leading to substantial losses. To stay afloat, many firms, including Argo Blockchain, had to explore alternative strategies such as selling key assets and Bitcoin reserves.
One of the reasons for the asset’s price decline was the substantial increase in global hashrate, which grew by 78% this year, along with the overall network difficulty.
Argo Blockchain faced the threat of bankruptcy in late 2022 but managed to secure its survival through an agreement with Galaxy Digital. This collaboration resulted in the sale of Argo’s Helios Mining Center for $65 million in December and the refinancing of a $35 million three-year backed loan. These transactions allowed Argo Blockchain to reduce its total indebtedness by $41 million and simplify its operating structure.
Over time, Argo Blockchain has increased its hashrate to 2.6EH/s and added 1,242 BlockMiner machines to its facilities in Quebec. The company plans to further raise its hashrate to 2.8EH/s in the coming months. Additionally, as part of its debt reduction plan, Argo intends to sell certain non-core assets.
